TREK Wayfinders

WAYFINDER: A Leadership Bridge for Aspiring Peer Mentors
A TREK Extension Program

For students who have completed at least one season as a TREK Adventurer and are showing signs of readiness for more responsibility—but aren't quite ready for full Peer Mentor status—we’re excited to introduce Wayfinder.

WAYFINDER APPLICATION

What is the Wayfinder Program?

Wayfinder is a TREK extension program that is designed to teach students the foundational skills needed to become future TREK Peer Mentors. It's a stepping stone for students eager to grow into leadership roles, while still receiving the support and coaching they need.

Wayfinders are learners on a new kind of journey
They are developing the tools it takes to lead with empathy, communicate with clarity, and build trust with peers—especially those who may think, act, or connect a little differently than they do. At the same time, Wayfinders may still be working toward mastery of the 12 executive function skills we focus on at the ISAAC Foundation. That’s why this unique role offers both leadership opportunity and structured support.

How to Start: Required Participation Week

June 29 – July 2 | TREK Week 1

Students will begin their journey by participating in Week 1 of TREK alongside other aspiring Wayfinders. This shared launchpad helps set the tone for the rest of the program by giving students time to build supportive relationships, practice group awareness, and begin developing leadership presence. This week is essential—it lays the groundwork for understanding group dynamics, communication expectations, and what it means to support another peer without taking over.

What Will Wayfinders Learn?

Wayfinders will practice:

Using executive function skills (like impulse control, flexible thinking, and emotional regulation) to connect with peers—even when they may not be a typical “friend pick.”

Joining in activities outside their comfort zone, modeling open-mindedness and encouragement.

Keeping their Adventurer safe, emotionally and physically, during all activities.

Offering support without taking over—learning the art of coaching, not controlling.

Respecting boundaries and avoiding bossy behaviors.

Using kind, inclusive language that encourages participation and builds confidence.

Who Makes a Good Wayfinder?

This is a great fit for students who:

Have shown maturity in past summer/after school sessions

Have access to a device that can connect to Wi-Fi or use cell data

Enjoy helping others, but still need guidance on how to lead gently

Are curious about becoming a future Peer Mentor

Want to grow their leadership skills in a safe, structured, and supported environment
